Man Bites Dog

Damien Cluzel - guitar
Mark Haanstra - bass guitar
Emmanuel Scarpa - drums
Tobias Klein - bass clarinet, alto saxophone

We started this band in 1994, first in order to play heavy-metal versions of Ornette Coleman tunes. Later our own stuff. Until 2002 Bernt Nellen played the drums, then Emmanuel Scarpa joined the band. In 2001 we did a tour with as guest tenorsax and clarinet player Chris Speed. From 2003 on MBD played as a quartet, with bass guitarist Mark Haanstra. Later, singer Sylvia de Hartog joined as a guest for some tracks. In 2004, MBD collaborated with Amsterdam Klezmer Band, performing as a 10-piece band.

reviews

'... comes as close as possible to the cutting edge of modern jazz without falling off. It largely avoids the self-consciousness that weighs so heavily on the music of likeminded groups; it is serious without being dull, fun without being trite, earnest without being amateurish. Because the musicians build on a robust base of influences and do so intelligently, there are touchstones galore for listeners from across the music spectrum: rock, jazz, world, contemporary classical (another amusing little paradox), and even punk and ska.
E.J. Iannelli, All About Jazz

"...since ten years one of the absolute highlights of the Amsterdam jazzscene..."
